TO SEE OR NOT TO SEE - by Maham Tariq (RMC)

TO SEE OR NOT TO SEE!
(ARTICLE BY: Maham Tariq, 4th year MBBS, Rawalpindi Medical College)

…and this is unlike anything u might b expecting under this heading.

I was in 10th grade when I went to collect my roll no slip from school and my teacher said to me “beta jo student apkay peechay bethaygi board k exams may us say puch lijiayga, usay kuch na ata ho tau bta dijiayga”. Incidentally, this teacher used to teach as Islamiat.
Time...Well...it flies. Here I am now, Alhamdulilah, in the 4rth yr of my medical school. And things haven’t changed one bit. Our professors remind us every day that we since we would b dealing with human lives therefore we better study exceptionally hard and make sure that no one pays the price of our carelessness with their life. Paradoxically, when prof comes, many of them “help” in OSPEs. About 99.9% students tend to “help” each other in exams and those who don’t….well they are “mean and stubborn”.

Interestingly sometimes when we get our tests
back after checking, we realize that our
answers along with writing and presentation were at par with and sometimes even better than those who scored better than us. So what is it that made them score higher? And the answer is downright simple. These things...marks, passing, distinction, supplies are governed by a very delicate balance of our destiny, prayers and hard work, totally unaffected by whether we cheat or not. And here we are, under this impression that the more we cheat in exams, the more likely we are to score higher.

Truth is, we would get whatever is ours by destiny without resorting to any unfair means. God is not dependent on our cheating to bless us with good marks. And to top it all, those who cheat have never really tasted success. The frustration which comes from flunking serves its own noble purposes. It motivates us to work harder, to understand ourselves well enough to know our shortcomings and to exploit our potentials to the fullest in order to succeed. And everyone can do that. If you don’t believe you’re capable of succeeding without cheating, well you’re doubting God then =) He has given everyone equal capability. Success might seem harder this way, but trust me, the only hard part here is not cheating. Our result would be the same whether we cheat or not. It’s just that sometimes we r too shortsighted to realize that. This reminds me what I was told a long time ago “Insan ki qismet may jo hota hai, vo tau usay mil k rehna hota hai, albata apna rasta banda khud chunta hai”. So whether we opt for the right path or the wrong one, the results going to be the very same..whether we believe it or not=)
“…go easy on yourself for the outcome of all affairs is determined by Allah’s decree, if something is meant to go elsewhere, it will never come your way, but if it is yours by destiny, from you, it can never flee”.

Ure ryt but as they say the change has to begin 4m within us:)

well yeah, then ask the guys in UHS to make the exams for human beings, not robots who have memory chips installed in their heads.

aand also, make a system wheroe you support a student, throughout the year, not that leave him alone the whole year and rape him/her in prof

i mean come on maham tariq! do you really think we are treated like human beings in med school ? where no professor (except a few) gives a damn about you the whole damn year, and leave all the responsibility on the student to somehow still "perform well" in prof ?

before criticizing some people who have a heart for the student, criticize the corrupt uhs system which makes us cheat

also, you mentioned cheating specefically in OSPEs. well ospe itself is a structured PRACTICAL exam. right ? it means its content must also be related to the practicals portion of our cource. agtreed ? but i dont remember that everytime ospe comes from our practical notebooks. some percentage of the questions are from the textbook or sometimes also out of the course.

Last year HOD of community medicine also accepted that the OSPE was extraordinarily tough/ not of the mental level for an undergrad student

last years surgery paper of final year was a ditto copy of an indian PG level blog (you can confirm). so you set your question papers out of course or from PG level internet blogs, then you dont expect the students will cheat or that someone should help . doesnt seem like a balanced equation to me

P.S. apologies in advance for being rude
